I just finished making my new surfboard. This is my 2nd attempt a shaping/glassing something on my own. I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Can't wait to test it now.
It's a 5'10 mini-Simmons outline. Flat bottom and very little rocker. Slight concave in the tail with glassed on keels (home made cloth inlay) and of course my own art on it.

I got a few samples and I really like them. They are very tough and durable. The designs are embedded into the case so the design is there for life – no fading or peeling.
Also, it still allows access to all the device features which sounds obvious but for some reasons my old cases didn't.

I made a few boards before but I never had a proper rack for it. Since I needed one immediately to start glassing a board I'd just shapped, but didn't have access to proper 2x4 pieces of wood to make it, I decided to improvise with what I had. Here's a small shaping rack I made from old pallet wood.

Flip it over and there is my glassing stand. happy.

If you've been in the sea when waves are coming in then i'm sure you'll appreciate the personal feel of this painting. It's that split second, that last vision of an unbroken wall of water coming at you while you're grinning from ear to ear. At that moment, very little matters ; worries are washed away and as the wave passes over you, you find yourself still smilling ... and smilling is what life is about.

Drift wood, recycling and other diy frames

Repurposing my water trough

I'm a hoarder. I like to collect things people don't use anymore and give them a new life.
I'm a firm believer that re-use is the way to helping the environment.
All these new eco products are great but have one major downside : They're all new manufactured products. How can you help the environment by taking more resources and making yet new stuff.
Reuse instead.

Anyway, when I moved to my new house, I new there was something nice to be done with the old water collectors.

I started with cleaning up the area. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it yet, I just knew I had to do something. The "only" challenge was I had no experience whatsoever in building projects ...

Once it was all cleared of vegetation, I emptied the tank and started making an opening in the 1ft thick wall... turns out, I spent a fortune on plasters and band aids.

In the meantim, spring arrived and we decided to paint the sad looking walls of our little cottage house. Everything looks better with a bit o' paint.

Next, I finished the opening (about 1m wide) and finished the paths around the house. These are very important for any house as they help dry the walls and help prevent dampness inside. Also it's much easier to walk around the house when it's wet.

I left this project at that for a few months, trying to decide what to do next. I also sorted the paperwork. luckily, the structure was exempt from planning permission.

When friends approached me and told me they were getting rid of their hot tub, I instantly knew this was the right place for it. And it kept witht he theme of water ... water collector - hot tub ... right ? right ? get it ?
Anyway, it made sense in my head. I'll spare you the dismantling part (it came in a wooden shed type of structure ... and yes, I kept all the wood) and transport but we eventually got it on our grounds.
The opening was just wide enough to allow to slide the thing in on it's side.

I had to get some of the pipes fixed for leaks and a friend of mine looked after the electrics. Luckily again, most of the electrical components were in working order, bar the heating element. I was fried and beyond fixing. A quick look on ebay, and I had the element in my letter box.

I used some of the wood I had to secure and level the tub itself and used the old windows from the old shed structure to make new ones ; double glazed !

I was time to start on the building part.

Once I raised the walls high enough and plastered them, it was time to put the roof down. I had been gathering 2x4 here and there in the meantime (skip, building sites, friends ... ) so i only had to get and extra 4 or 5 to make the whole roof structure.

I got some shed roofing sheets from a local company. There's a 8x12 patch of transparent sheeting. It lets plenty of light in during the day and makes heats up the place naturaly. The downside is that once the sun is down, heat loss occur quickly as there's no roof insulation. However by then you're either in the tub, or it's covered with the insulated sheets of foam.

I realised too late that I should've finished the external plaster first as well as the leveling of the door walls. It's not too difficult to do at this stage but was a bit more cumbersome than it needed to be.

And that's the structural building done (just needs a bit o' paint...) . It's not a pro finish I know, but it's my first building project and I'm pretty proud of it.

Next comes tilling, sawing, hammering, cladding, cursing...

I had been collecting old wood, tiles, bags of cement etc... over the years so I had everything handy.

I made an old door using the wood from the old shed. A bit of advice, when you put it down, make sure you can still open it from the inside...

The tub is now working and the room is fully tiled. I will also do a big mural painting of a wave on the back wall (where the picture is taken) to look at when you're in the tub.

I got some blocks of kingspan insulation foam from a local building site ( I asked the guys working there if they had any leftovers and i ended up with 4 full sheets) and fully insulated the roof.

I then made a small unit with wood leftovers and broken tiles. handy to store the towels and a few fresh cans ... and a little home made mural painting.

...well maybe not funny but somehow strange and ... well, strange.

Some paintings seem to go quickly while others remain with you for a while until you get 3 or 4 request for them all at the same time.
I've given up trying to understand how this work, I'd rather be happy for the people who so something they liked in them and have decided to hand them up in their house. Congrats and thank you for the support!

... ... yeah, life's funny, right the first time.

a break a bath and back...

Sorry all for the lack of update but I had to take a small [well deserved...] holiday break for a change. A break from painting and thinking about painting and dreaming about it ...
So I did just that. I cleaned my palet and folded the easel for a month. I was nice but I must admit I'm getting the urge again after a month.

Now this is not to say I did nothing either, I just can't stay iddle for too long, so I did a couple of jobs around the house and...emmm built a room. Yep that's right, we're talking blocks, cement, plumming electrics, roofing carpentry and tiling. I'd never done any of that before so it was a steep learning curve. It will host a ... jacuzzi... (yes). It was kindly given to me by a couple of friends who weren't using it and I had an old water collector tank to use for it as a base. i just needed to build up the walls and roof it (and electrics and ...) .Here's a pic:

I haven't pictures of what it looks like right now, but I'll try to take some this weekend.
The thing had been sitting idle for a while so the pumps heating were all rusted and damp, but a good friend got them working again...

It'll be a life saver after those long cold winter surf sessions, I can just see it.

Anyway, back to painting...

Another surfboard painting for the Aloha Surf School. Funny thing is when i was looking for a soundtrack for the video I got a nasty, and unsolicited, email from an "art expert" telling me how cheap my work looks and how I get all my values wrong, that it's not how I should paint things, how flawed my technique is ... etc. So this song felt just appropriate :)

On a different note, a lot of people are asking me about how much i charge for a board. Surfboard painting start at €130 for a board up to 6ft or bellow.

There's then an additional €2 per additional inch in length, here's a rough guide per foot:

This is a painitng that was requested by Mattu Noone from "The Bahh Band" for their coming tour of Ireland.

There was a very tight deadline for this and it came when I was already very busy so I had to use acrylics instead of my standard oil paintings to allow for shorter drying times. Think the result came close to what I'd normally get with oils.

I always get exited when a big storm comes in. Sure, it means a couple of days of misery, but when the winds eventually shift or die the water turns into shades of blue and brown, the surface becomes glass and waves come, relentless powerfull beasts rolling one after the other.

It happens all the time, in bars everywhere. It's getting late, closing time is nearing on you and the weird stranger that was in the corner of the bar 3 hours earlier has turned into master Yoda. He's your life and relationship coach, your go-to guy, your best Buddie ... you've told him things you wouldn't tell your childhood friends and will definitely meet up again...
that's until you wake up the next morning of course ... :)
